Bohinj in Winter, When the Valley Becomes a Fairytale
Most people know Bohinj as a summer destination, swimming, hiking, kayaking. But winter Bohinj is an entirely different world, and many visitors consider it even more beautiful than in summer. When snow covers the mountains and valley, the lake sometimes freezes over, and fog settles in the basin while the sun shines on Vogel above, that’s when Bohinj shows its most magical side.
This guide covers everything you need to know about a winter holiday in Bohinj.
Skiing at Vogel
About the Resort
Vogel is the closest ski resort to Lake Bohinj and one of the most distinctive in Slovenia. The cable car from the valley floor (the lower station is just a 10-minute drive from Ribčev Laz) lifts you to 1,535 m, where a view opens up that’s difficult to overstate, the entire Lake Bohinj spread out below you, Triglav and the Julian Alps all around.
The Runs
Vogel offers approximately 22 km of runs at elevations between 1,535 m and 1,800 m. The terrain covers all levels:
- Beginner runs, several easy slopes near the top of the cable car, ideal for learning
- Intermediate runs, the majority of Vogel’s terrain, suitable for recreational skiers
- Advanced runs, some steeper sections for experienced skiers
The elevation provides relatively reliable snow conditions from December to March (sometimes April). The resort also has a snowmaking system to supplement natural snowfall.
Prices and Crowds
Vogel is significantly more affordable than most Austrian or Swiss ski resorts. A day pass for an adult costs considerably less than at comparable resorts in neighbouring countries. Lift queue times are typically short, even on weekends, you’ll rarely wait more than a few minutes.
The View
What makes Vogel special is the panorama. While you ski, you look down at the lake, across at snow-covered peaks, and over the valley. Very few ski resorts in the Alps can offer this combination.
Equipment and Ski School
Equipment rental is available at the top of the cable car. The ski school offers lessons for children and adults, individual and group.

Cross-Country Skiing
The valley floor around Lake Bohinj has maintained cross-country trails that are regularly groomed in winter. The trails run alongside the lake, through forests, and across the valley floor.
- Total length: Several kilometres of prepared trails (varies by season and snow conditions)
- Style: Trails are prepared for both classic and skating techniques
- Difficulty: Mostly flat to gently undulating, suitable for all levels
Cross-country skiing along Lake Bohinj is a special experience, the silence, the snow-covered landscape, and the mountain backdrop create an atmosphere you won’t find in urban ski centres.
Snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is one of the finest winter activities in Bohinj, and it requires no prior experience. Strap on snowshoes and head out into the snowy landscape, into the forest, up to alpine meadows, or along the lake.
Recommended Snowshoe Routes
- Along the lake, an easy path beside the snow-covered lake, suitable for everyone
- Vogar, a moderate hike up to the alpine pasture above the lake with winter views
- Uskovnica, a meadow above Stara Fužina, accessible in winter too
Local guides offer organised snowshoe tours with all equipment provided. This is recommended if you don’t know the terrain.
Winter Hiking
Some lower paths remain accessible in winter without special equipment (though sturdy winter boots are essential):
- The lakeside walk from Ribčev Laz to Ukanc
- Mostnica Gorge (accessible in winter but requires caution, the path can be icy)
- Short walks through the village and surroundings
For higher routes in winter, you’ll need crampons (and possibly an ice axe), which can be purchased or rented locally.
Ice Skating
When Lake Bohinj freezes (this doesn’t happen every winter, but does occur in colder years), skating on the lake is a remarkable experience. Local authorities mark safe areas for skating when the ice is thick enough. Never venture onto the ice without checking local safety information.
Post-Activity Wellness

After a day in the cold, whether skiing, cross-country, or snowshoeing, a warm soak or sauna session is the ideal way to end the day.
At Apartments Resman, there’s a private wellness area with:
- Jacuzzi, a hot tub to relax tired muscles
- Finnish sauna, a classic dry sauna for deep warming
- Infrared sauna, a gentler alternative, suitable for those who don’t tolerate high temperatures
Wellness is available by arrangement and at extra charge. We recommend booking in advance, especially during the winter season when demand is higher.
After your wellness session, you can relax in your apartment, no need to go anywhere, which is a particular advantage in winter.
Equipment Storage
Ski gear, snowshoes, hiking poles, all of this needs somewhere to go. At Apartments Resman, there’s a secure storage room for skis and other equipment. Your gear is safe overnight, and in the morning you simply collect it and head out.
This is especially practical if you have rental equipment, no need to bring it into your apartment or deal with wet boots in the living space.
Winter Conditions and Preparation
Snow Conditions
Bohinj village sits at approximately 530 m elevation. Snow in the valley isn’t guaranteed every winter, some years bring abundant snowfall, others less. Vogel (1,535–1,800 m) has significantly more reliable snow.
For current snow conditions, check the Vogel ski resort website or local weather forecasts.
Clothing
Expect temperatures from -10 °C to +5 °C in the valley during winter. It’s colder at Vogel. We recommend:
- Multiple layers (moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer, wind- and waterproof outer shell)
- Warm hat, gloves, scarf
- Winter boots with good grip
- Sunglasses (snow reflects sunlight intensely)
Winter Roads
Roads to Bohinj are regularly ploughed and gritted in winter, but winter equipment (winter tyres) is legally required in Slovenia from 15 November to 15 March. Pay particular attention on the Bled–Bohinj section, which passes through gorges and can be icy in the mornings.
Short Days
In winter, it gets dark early in Bohinj, around 16:30 in December. Plan outdoor activities for the morning and early afternoon, and dedicate the later hours to wellness or exploring local restaurants.

Winter Food
Winter is the ideal time to enjoy traditional Bohinj cuisine. Warming dishes for after a day in the cold:
- Jota, a thick stew of beans, sauerkraut, and potatoes
- Štruklji, rolled dumplings with various fillings (cottage cheese, walnut, tarragon)
- Žganci, buckwheat or corn porridge with sour milk
- Bohinj cheese, a hard cheese from the local alpine dairy tradition
Restaurants in Stara Fužina, Ribčev Laz, and Bohinjska Bistrica serve these dishes throughout winter.
Who Is Winter Bohinj For?
Winter Bohinj is ideal for:
- Skiers seeking authentic alpine skiing without the crowds and high prices of major resorts
- Cross-country skiers and snowshoers wanting peaceful winter nature
- Couples looking for a romantic winter retreat with wellness
- Families who want to show their children a real winter, snow, skiing, sledging
- Photographers wanting to capture winter landscapes without crowds
Winter Bohinj is not for those seeking a lively après-ski scene with bars and clubs. Bohinj in winter is quiet and peaceful, and that’s precisely its charm.
Practical Tips
How Many Days for a Winter Holiday?
We recommend at least 3–4 days. One day for Vogel, one for cross-country or snowshoeing, one for a winter walk and wellness, one for exploring (Bled, local cuisine). A week is ideal.
Do I Need a Car?
Yes, in winter a car is highly recommended. Public transport runs less frequently in winter, and reaching Vogel and other destinations is much easier by car. You can park free at Apartments Resman.
Where Can I Rent Equipment?
Ski equipment can be rented at the top of the Vogel cable car or at sports shops in Bohinjska Bistrica and Ribčev Laz. Snowshoes and cross-country equipment are also available for rental.
Final Thoughts
Winter Bohinj is a secret known to locals and returning visitors. While crowds flock to the big-name resorts, Bohinj offers tranquillity, nature, and an authentic alpine experience. Skiing at Vogel with views of the lake, cross-country through snow-covered forests, snowshoeing to a mountain meadow, and an evening in a private wellness area, that’s a winter holiday worth having.
Pack your warm clothes, book your apartment, and let winter Bohinj work its magic.
