Where to Eat in Bohinj, A Local Host's Restaurant Guide

Restaurant guide for Bohinj from a local host. Traditional gostilnas, lakeside dining, local specialties, and budget-friendly tips.

Bohinj Isn’t Just Nature, It’s Food Too

When people think of Bohinj, they think of the lake, the mountains, and nature. But Bohinj also has a rich culinary tradition rooted in alpine farming, cheesemaking, and fishing. In this guide, we share our experience with restaurants and gostilnas (traditional Slovenian inns) in the area, as local hosts who live and work here, not as professional food critics.

A note of caution: Bohinj is not Ljubljana or Bled. The restaurant selection is smaller, opening hours are shorter (especially off-season), and for dinner it’s wise to arrive before 20:00. But what Bohinj offers is authentic, here you eat the food that locals actually eat, not tourist-adapted versions.

Breakfast Options at Sobe Resman

Your day in Bohinj starts in the shared kitchen at Sobe Resman, where you can prepare your own breakfast at your own pace. The kitchen is fully equipped, fridge, stove, microwave, kettle, and all the essentials, so you can stock up at the nearby Mercator shop and make exactly what you like.

For a more local experience, we recommend ordering Bohinj Breakfast (Bohinjski zajtrk), a service that delivers a homemade breakfast made with local ingredients straight to your door. It’s a wonderful way to taste Bohinj’s culinary tradition without lifting a finger.

Traditional Restaurants Near Ribčev Laz

Gostilna Mihovc

Gostilna Mihovc in Stara Fužina (less than 2 km from Sobe Resman) is one of the oldest and most popular inns in the valley. They serve traditional Slovenian food, beef soup, žlikrofi (Bohinj-style bread dumplings with various fillings), trout, game, and homemade desserts.

The space is rustic, the food generous. Prices are moderate for the region, expect between EUR 15 and 30 for a main course with soup. Reservations for dinner are recommended, especially in summer.

Gostilna Rupa

Gostilna Rupa in Srednja Vas is known for its home cooking and pleasant atmosphere. The menu includes classic Slovenian dishes, jota (bean stew with cabbage and potatoes), various roasts, polenta, and seasonal dishes.

The location is a few kilometres from Ribčev Laz (approximately 5 km by car), but the drive takes you through beautiful Bohinj countryside.

Restaurant Danica

Restaurant Danica in Bohinjska Bistrica is somewhat more modern than the traditional gostilnas but still serves local food. Located in the hotel of the same name, it offers a broader selection including fish, meat, and vegetarian dishes.

Bohinjska Bistrica is approximately 6 km from Ribčev Laz (10 minutes by car).

Gostišče Kramar

Gostišče Kramar, also in Bohinjska Bistrica, offers classic inn fare, soups, roasts, fried trout, and homemade desserts. Prices are accessible and portions generous.

Lakeside Dining

Gostilna Kramar (by the lake)

By the lake, not far from the footbridge over the Sava Bohinjka, Gostilna Kramar offers food with a view of the lake. The menu includes pizzas, grilled dishes, salads, and drinks. This isn’t a gourmet restaurant, but the lakeside location makes it special, particularly for lunch after a walk around the lake.

Strud’l

Near the western end of the lake, close to St. John’s Church, you’ll find Strud’l, which serves strudel and other pastries. The location is a popular stop during a lakeside walk. The menu is limited, but for coffee and cake with a lake view, this is one of the most beautiful spots in the valley.

Local Specialities You Should Try

Bohinj has several culinary specialities that you won’t find everywhere in Slovenia:

Bohinj Cheese

Bohinj cheese has a long heritage, cheesemaking in the Bohinj alpine pastures has been practised for centuries. The cheese is made from cow’s milk, has a distinctive semi-hard texture, and its flavour varies depending on the season and the specific alpine pasture where it was produced.

You can buy Bohinj cheese at the local market (on Thursdays in season in Ribčev Laz), in small shops in the valley, or directly from farmers. Try it with homemade bread and honey, a simple but excellent combination.

Bohinj Trout

Lake Bohinj and the surrounding rivers are home to Soča and brown trout. Grilled trout or fried trout are classic dishes on Bohinj gostilna menus. Fish isn’t always available, it depends on the season and catch, but when it is, treat yourself.

Žlikrofi

Although žlikrofi are more closely associated with Idrija, some Bohinj gostilnas prepare a local variation. These are pasta parcels filled with various stuffings (potato, cheese, meat), served with sauce or butter.

Strudel

Apple strudel and variations with fruit or cheese are a beloved dessert throughout the region. The best strudel is homemade, using apples from the local area.

Honey

Beekeeping has a long tradition in Slovenia, and Bohinj is no exception. Local honey, linden, forest, or wildflower, makes an excellent souvenir or breakfast accompaniment.

Budget-Friendly Options

Bohinj isn’t expensive compared to western Alpine destinations, but if you want to save on meals, you have options:

  • Self-catering: Sobe Resman offers use of a shared kitchen, meaning you can prepare your own meals. The nearest shop (Mercator) is in Ribčev Laz, just a few minutes’ walk away.
  • BBQ on the terrace: Sobe Resman has a BBQ grill on the terrace that guests can use. Buy meat and vegetables from the shop, fire up the grill, and enjoy dinner under the stars, no service, no waiting, no bill.
  • Burek and bakeries: In Bohinjska Bistrica, you’ll find a bakery with fresh pastries and burek, a classic budget-friendly meal.
  • Picnic: Buy cheese, bread, fruit, and local cured meat, and set up a picnic by the lake. Some of the best meals in Bohinj aren’t in a restaurant.

Vegetarian and Vegan Options

Let’s be honest, Bohinj is not a paradise for vegans. Traditional cuisine is built around meat, dairy, and eggs. Vegetarian dishes are available in most restaurants (salads, pasta, polenta, štruklje/rolled pastries), but the vegan selection is limited.

If you’re vegan, self-catering may be your best option. Shops carry basic plant-based products, but for speciality vegan items, you may need to visit a larger town (Ljubljana is an hour’s drive away).

Some newer cafés and gostilnas in the valley are slowly expanding their offerings, but check the menu before visiting if you have specific dietary requirements.

Coffee and Desserts

For coffee, stop at one of the cafés by the lake or in Bohinjska Bistrica. Coffee in Slovenia is generally good, espresso, cappuccino, and Turkish coffee are available everywhere. Prices are lower than in western European countries, an espresso typically costs EUR 1.50–2.50.

For desserts, look for strudel, kremšnita (cream cake), or palačinke (crêpes). Many gostilnas have homemade desserts that are often better than those in dedicated pastry shops.

Tips for Dining in Bohinj

  • Reserve for dinner: Especially in summer. Restaurants are small, space is limited.
  • Come early: Kitchens often close at 20:00 or 21:00, especially off-season.
  • Payment cards: Most restaurants accept cards, but carry some cash for smaller venues.
  • Closed days: Some gostilnas have a rest day during the week (often Monday or Tuesday). Check before visiting.
  • Portions: In traditional gostilnas, portions are generous. If you’re not particularly hungry, one main course is often enough.

Final Thoughts

Food in Bohinj isn’t gourmet in the fine-dining sense, and that’s precisely its strength. It’s home-cooked, generous, and made with local ingredients. When you sit in a gostilna that has been operating for decades, and a bowl of beef soup and roasted trout is placed in front of you, you understand that this food is part of the place, just like the lake and the mountains.

And when you return to Sobe Resman after dinner, have one more coffee on the terrace and listen to the silence. In Bohinj, even meals slow down, and that’s the whole point.
