Summer in Bohinj, Different from What You Expect
If you’re used to summers on the Adriatic or Mediterranean coast, Bohinj will surprise you. There’s no crowding, no concrete beaches, no loud music from bars. Lake Bohinj is a glacial lake at 526 metres above sea level, surrounded by the Julian Alps, and summer here has its own distinct rhythm.
Days are warm but rarely muggy. Mornings are fresh, afternoons sunny, and evenings cool enough that you’ll want a light jumper. The lake is large enough that you never feel crowded, but small enough that you can walk around it in a single day.
Swimming in Lake Bohinj
Water Temperatures by Month
Lake Bohinj is an alpine glacial lake, which means the water is noticeably cooler than the sea or thermal lakes. For many, this is a plus, the water is refreshing and crystal clear.
Approximate surface water temperatures:
- June: 16–19 °C, warm enough for a quick swim for many, but the water is still cold
- July: 20–23 °C, the most pleasant temperature for swimming; shallower areas warm up faster
- August: 21–24 °C, the warmest month; in a hot summer, temperatures can reach 25 °C at the surface in shallow sections
- September: 17–20 °C, the water starts to cool, but sunny days still make it pleasant
These temperatures are approximate and vary from year to year. In cooler summers, the lake may not reach 20 °C; in exceptionally warm ones, it can exceed 24 °C.
Where to Swim?
The lake has several popular swimming spots:
- Beach at Camp Zlatorog (southwest end): The largest maintained beach with a gravel entry into the water. Suitable for families.
- Grassy areas along the northern shore: Less visited, more peaceful. Entry into the water can be steep in places.
- Western end of the lake (near St. John’s Church): Shallower water that warms up more quickly. Popular with families with small children.
- Wild swimming spots: Along the entire lake, smaller spots exist where locals swim. No lifeguards, no infrastructure, but also no crowds.
Important: Lake Bohinj is a natural lake without lifeguards at most locations. Swimmers should be aware of their own responsibility, especially as the water is very deep in some places (maximum depth is around 45 m) and temperature drops sharply with depth.

Kayaking and SUP
Lake Bohinj is one of the best spots in Slovenia for kayaking and SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboarding). The water is calm, motorised boats are banned on the lake, which means the surface is usually still, especially in the morning hours.
Where to Rent Equipment?
Several providers around the lake rent kayaks, canoes, and SUP boards. Prices typically range from EUR 10–20 per hour for SUP and EUR 15–25 per hour for a kayak (prices are approximate and subject to change). Equipment is usually rented directly at the lakeside without advance booking, though at peak season (late July, early August) it’s wise to arrive early.
Best Time to Paddle
- Morning (before 10:00): The lake is calmest, the light is soft, and most tourists are still asleep. This is the ideal time for SUP, as balance on still water is much easier.
- Late afternoon (after 16:00): The sun is less intense, and the lake settles after the afternoon breeze.
- Avoid: Midday hours (12:00–15:00), when the sun is strongest and a light wind often picks up on the lake.
What Will You See from the Water?
From the lake, you get a perspective that you simply can’t get from shore. Triglav and the surrounding peaks reflect on the surface, and in the shallows you can see the bottom in places, the water is that clear. Along the western shore, underwater plants create an interesting subaquatic landscape. Occasionally you may spot ducks, herons, or even swans.
Cycling Around the Lake and Valley
Bohinj is cyclist-friendly. The valley is relatively flat, and the roads aren’t heavily trafficked (except at the height of season in Ribčev Laz).
Recommended Cycling Routes
- Lake circuit: Partly on paved roads, partly on gravel. Suitable for all bikes except road bikes.
- Ribčev Laz – Stara Fužina – Studor: A short, easy ride through villages with traditional Bohinj architecture. Visit the toplars (hayracks) in Studor, they’re a distinctive feature of the region.
- Bohinjska Bistrica – Ribčev Laz: Along the Sava Bohinjka river, mostly flat.
- For the ambitious: The climb to Pokljuka plateau offers demanding riding with beautiful views.
Bikes can be rented from several providers in Ribčev Laz and Bohinjska Bistrica. E-bikes are increasingly popular and widely available.
At Sobe Resman, we offer secure storage for bikes, which is useful if you’ve brought an expensive bicycle and don’t want to leave it outside overnight.

The Resman Terrace, Your Summer Base
When you return from the lake, the bike, or the trail, the terrace at Sobe Resman is the space where summer in Bohinj truly shows itself.
The terrace includes:
- A fireplace for pleasant summer evenings
- A BBQ for preparing your own meals (since Sobe Resman doesn’t have a restaurant, the BBQ is a great dinner option)
- A ping-pong table for those who still have energy after an active day
- A swing and sun loungers for complete relaxation
- Views of the surrounding nature without noise or traffic
Summer evenings on the terrace have a special quality. When the sun sets behind the mountains, the temperature drops to a pleasant 15–20 °C, the air smells of grass and pine, and the only sounds are crickets and the occasional laughter from the neighbouring village. This is the moment when you understand why people have been coming to Bohinj for generations.
Evening Atmosphere at the Lake
Summer evenings at Lake Bohinj are special. When the day visitors head home (most are day-trippers from Bled or Ljubljana), the lake becomes almost empty.
The sun sets behind the mountains on the western side, the sky turns shades of orange and pink, and the lake surface becomes perfectly still. This is the time for a relaxed lakeside stroll, for photography, or simply for sitting on a bench and watching the day say goodbye.
A few restaurants and cafés in Ribčev Laz stay open in the evening, but expect a quiet atmosphere, this isn’t Bled with its promenade. Bohinj is for those who appreciate silence.
