Savica Waterfall and Mostnica Gorge, Bohinj's Must-See Attractions

Visit Savica Waterfall and Mostnica Gorge in one day. Trail info, access from Bohinj, best times to visit, and photography tips.

Two Natural Treasures, One Unforgettable Day

The Bohinj valley is home to some of the most striking natural attractions in Slovenia. Among them, two stand out above the rest: Savica Waterfall, one of the most famous waterfalls in the country, and Mostnica Gorge, a mysterious mountain gorge with emerald-green pools. The best part? Both can be visited in a single day, making for the perfect outing during your stay in Bohinj.

Savica Waterfall, An Icon of Slovenian Nature

What Makes Savica Special

Savica Waterfall is one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in Slovenia. Its distinctive shape, water plunging in two stages from a cave opening in a rock face, has inspired poets, artists, and travelers for centuries. France Prešeren, Slovenia’s national poet, dedicated his epic poem “The Baptism on the Savica” to this waterfall, cementing its place in Slovenian cultural identity.

The waterfall sits at an elevation of approximately 836 meters, with water falling roughly 78 meters across two cascades. The upper section emerges from an underground cave, giving it an almost mystical appearance, especially when sunlight catches the fine mist.

Getting to Savica

The starting point for the Savica trail is the mountain hut at Savica (Koča pri Savici), located at the end of the valley on the western side of Lake Bohinj. From Ribčev Laz, where Rooms Resman is located, it is approximately 12 kilometers by car. The road passes through the village of Ukanc and continues along a narrow road to the parking area.

Parking is paid and during summer months (July and August) the lot fills up early. We recommend setting out as early as possible, ideally before 9:00 AM.

From the parking area to the viewing platform at the waterfall, the trail takes about 20 minutes. The path is well-maintained but includes a significant number of steps, around 553 concrete stairs. The trail is manageable for anyone with average fitness but does require proper footwear. Flip-flops and sandals are not suitable.

Entrance Fee and Opening Hours

There is an entrance fee to visit Savica Waterfall. In the 2025 season, the adult fee was 6 EUR and the children’s fee was 3 EUR (check current prices before your visit). The waterfall is officially accessible from April to November, depending on weather conditions.

Best Times to Visit Savica

  • Spring (April–May): Water flow is at its peak due to snowmelt. The waterfall is at its most powerful during this period and highly photogenic. Temperatures are still cool, so bring a windbreaker.
  • Summer (June–August): The most popular time to visit. Water volume is lower than in spring but the waterfall remains impressive. Crowds are heaviest between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
  • Autumn (September–October): An excellent time to visit, fewer visitors, warm weather, and stunning fall colors in the surrounding forests.
  • Winter: The waterfall is generally closed to visitors, and the access road may be closed or impassable.

Photography Tips for Savica

Savica Waterfall is a dream location for photographers. Here are some practical tips:

  • Use a tripod for long exposures that create a silky water effect. Shutter speeds between 1/4 second and 2 seconds tend to produce the best results.
  • An ND (neutral density) filter is very useful, especially on sunny days when long exposures would otherwise be impossible.
  • Early morning offers the best light, the sun illuminates the waterfall from behind, creating beautiful contrast against the surrounding rock.
  • Watch for mist, fine water droplets collect on your lens. Keep a cleaning cloth handy.
  • A wide-angle lens (16–35mm) is ideal for capturing the full waterfall from the viewing platform.

Mostnica Gorge, Bohinj’s Hidden Treasure

What Is Mostnica Gorge

While Savica is famous across Slovenia, Mostnica Gorge is a quieter but equally stunning attraction. Over thousands of years, the Mostnica stream has carved its way through limestone rock, creating a narrow gorge with smooth, sculpted walls and deep pools of incredibly vivid emerald-green water.

The gorge is located near the village of Stara Fužina, just a few kilometers from Ribčev Laz. The full trail through the gorge and onward to the Voje alpine meadow is one of the most beautiful hiking routes in Bohinj.

The Trail Through the Gorge

The starting point for Mostnica Gorge is in the village of Stara Fužina, just 2 kilometers from Rooms Resman. There is a parking area at the trailhead (paid during summer season), from where the path follows the stream uphill.

Devil’s Bridge (Hudičev most) is the first notable landmark, an ancient stone bridge spanning the gorge, from which you get a spectacular view down into the narrow canyon and the turquoise water below. This is one of the most photographed spots in all of Bohinj.

The trail continues along the edge of the gorge, metal railings and wooden walkways are installed at certain points. The path is not difficult but is narrow and wet in places, so proper footwear is essential.

Continuing to Voje

If you have the time and energy, we highly recommend continuing the trail to Voje, a flat alpine meadow with a small waterfall at its far end. The full round trip from Stara Fužina to Voje and back takes approximately 3–4 hours (about 9 km total). Voje is a popular rest stop with a mountain hut serving traditional Slovenian dishes like štruklji (rolled dumplings) and sour milk.

The trail to Voje is gentle and undemanding, making it suitable for families with children as well.

Best Times to Visit Mostnica

Mostnica Gorge is accessible from spring through autumn. The best times:

  • Summer: The water in the pools shows its most vivid colors when the sun is high. The best time for photography is between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM, when sunlight penetrates into the gorge and illuminates the water.
  • Autumn: Fewer visitors, and the forests surrounding the gorge glow with yellow and red foliage.
  • Spring: Water levels are high and the gorge is powerful, but the pools are less transparent.

Photography Tips for Mostnica

  • A polarizing filter is essential for gorge photography, it removes reflections from the water surface and reveals the stunning color beneath.
  • Devil’s Bridge is a must-shoot location. The best view is looking straight down from the bridge.
  • Look for details, the smooth, sculpted rock formations and mini cascades offer excellent subjects for close-up shots.
