Rainy Day in Bohinj — What to Do When the Weather Turns

What to do in Bohinj when it rains: wellness, museums, day trips, indoor activities and why bad weather days can be the most memorable.

It Will Rain. That’s Fine.

Bohinj sits in the Julian Alps. Mountains create weather. Rain is part of the package — roughly 2,000 mm per year, which is more than London sees in two years. The wettest months are typically October and November, but showers can arrive any day of the year, including midsummer.

The good news: rain in Bohinj is usually not all-day drizzle. Mountain weather moves fast. A morning downpour often clears to blue sky by noon. And even when it doesn’t clear, a rainy day in Bohinj is not a wasted day — it’s just a different kind of day.

Here’s what to do with it.

Option 1: Private Wellness

This is the best rainy day activity in Bohinj, full stop. There’s something uniquely satisfying about sitting in a hot jacuzzi while rain patters on the surface of the water and clouds drift through the mountains around you. The contrast between warm water and cool air intensifies the experience.

At Resman in Ribčev Laz, the private wellness (jacuzzi, Finnish sauna, and infrared sauna) is available by arrangement for 50 € per 2-hour session. You get the entire facility to yourself. Even if you weren’t planning to use it, a rainy afternoon is the perfect excuse.

Other properties with wellness in the broader Bohinj area include Hotel Jezero (shared spa), Eco Hotel Bohinj in Bohinjska Bistrica, and the Bohinj Water Park.

Option 2: The Bohinj Water Park

The Vodni park Bohinj in Bohinjska Bistrica (6 km from the lake) has indoor and outdoor pools, waterslides, a wellness area, and a fitness centre. It’s the most straightforward all-day indoor option, especially good for families with children.

Practical details: Open year-round. Full-day and half-day tickets available. Check current prices on their website. About a 10-minute drive from Ribčev Laz.

Option 3: Museums and Culture

Bohinj Museum (Muzej Tomaža Godca)

Located in Stara Fužina, a 10-minute walk from the lake. A small but well-curated museum about the history and culture of the Bohinj valley — traditional alpine life, cheese-making, iron smelting, and the natural environment. Allow about 1 hour.

Free entry with the Bohinj Guest Card (provided by registered accommodation).

Church of St. John the Baptist

The medieval church by the stone bridge in Ribčev Laz dates to the 13th century and contains remarkably well-preserved frescoes. Even if you’re not particularly interested in church architecture, the paintings are worth seeing. Free entry.

Alpine Dairy Museum (Planšarsko Muzej)

Also in Stara Fužina, this small museum documents the traditional practice of alpine dairy farming in the Bohinj valley. Combined with the Bohinj Museum for a cultural morning.

Option 4: Day Trips

Rain in Bohinj doesn’t mean rain everywhere. The coast is 2 hours south, and weather patterns can differ dramatically.

Bled (30 minutes)

Drive to Bled for the cream cake at Kavarna Park, the castle (which you can explore regardless of weather), and the covered restaurants along the shore. The island church is also rewarding in the rain — fewer crowds and a moody atmosphere.

Ljubljana (90 minutes)

Slovenia’s capital is full of covered attractions — the Central Market (open every day), the National Gallery, Metelkova cultural centre, the castle with its museum and viewing tower, and excellent cafes along the Ljubljanica river (many have covered terraces).

Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle (2 hours)

One of the most visited caves in Europe — completely underground, so rain is irrelevant. The cave train ride followed by a walking tour through the vast chambers is impressive at any age. Predjama Castle, built into a cliff face 10 minutes away, adds a dramatic second stop.

Škocjan Caves (2.5 hours)

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and, for many, more impressive than Postojna — an enormous underground canyon with an underground river. The scale is breathtaking. Further away but worth it if you have a full day.

Radovljica (40 minutes)

A charming small town with a well-preserved medieval centre and two surprisingly good museums: the Beekeeping Museum (bees are important in Slovenian culture) and the Gingerbread Museum. Also has excellent chocolate shops.

Option 5: Cook Something

If your accommodation has kitchen access, a rainy day is the perfect time to visit the local shops, pick up ingredients, and prepare a proper meal. The small shop in Ribčev Laz stocks basics, but for a better selection, drive to the Mercator supermarket in Bohinjska Bistrica.

Local ingredients worth buying: Bohinj cheese (sir iz Bohinja), local honey, smoked trout, fresh bread from a local bakery, seasonal vegetables.

At Resman, the shared kitchen on the ground floor has full cooking facilities and a spacious dining area — good for a leisurely meal when there’s nowhere to rush to.

Option 6: Walk in the Rain

This may sound counterintuitive, but hear it out. Lake Bohinj in rain is hauntingly beautiful. Mist rises from the surface, the mountains disappear into cloud, and the colours soften to a grey-green palette that you’ll never see in sunshine. If you have a proper rain jacket and waterproof shoes, a 30-minute walk along the shore in light rain is one of the most atmospheric experiences in Bohinj.

Serious hikers walk in rain all the time. The forest trails around Stara Fužina and along the Sava Bohinjka river are sheltered by the canopy and perfectly manageable in drizzle. Just avoid exposed mountain trails and anything involving steep rock during heavy rain.

Photography tip: Overcast and rainy conditions produce the softest, most even light — ideal for forest photography, waterfall shots (Savica looks magnificent with high water), and moody landscape images. Some of the best photographs of Bohinj are taken in rain.

Option 7: Read a Book

Bohinj is one of those rare places where doing nothing feels right. If you’ve brought a book — or even if you haven’t — an afternoon on a covered terrace listening to rain fall on the mountains, with a cup of coffee, is a perfectly valid way to spend time.

Not every hour needs an activity. Not every day needs a plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does it rain in Bohinj?

On average, expect some rain on roughly 12–15 days per month in spring and autumn, 8–10 days per month in summer. But “rain” often means a 30-minute shower rather than all-day grey. Mountain weather is unpredictable — always have a plan B.

Should I cancel outdoor plans for forecast rain?

Check the hourly forecast, not just the daily one. A day forecast of “rain” might mean a single morning shower followed by clear skies. Mountain weather changes fast. The Norwegian weather service (yr.no) provides the most accurate hourly forecasts for the Bohinj area.

Is the Mostnica Gorge walkable in rain?

Light rain is fine with good footwear — the path has some wooden sections that can be slippery. In heavy or prolonged rain, avoid it — the gorge paths can flood and become dangerous.

Can I still hike in rain?

On lower trails and forest paths, yes — with proper rain gear and waterproof boots. Avoid exposed ridges, mountain peaks, and steep rocky trails in heavy rain or thunderstorms.

What’s the best month to minimise rain?

Statistically, July tends to have the fewest rainy days, but no month is rain-free. January and February are often dry (cold and clear). The only guarantee is that you cannot guarantee sunshine — and that’s fine. Pack for it and embrace it.
