Bohinj with Kids — Family Activities and Where to Stay

Complete family guide to Lake Bohinj: kid-friendly activities, beaches, restaurants and accommodation tips for families visiting Triglav National Park.

Is Lake Bohinj Good for Families?

Yes — and for reasons that might not be obvious from the travel brochures. Lake Bohinj is not a theme park destination with organised entertainment and children’s clubs. It’s a real place where kids can swim in a genuine alpine lake, hike through actual forest, skip stones on a real shoreline, and fall asleep exhausted from a day outdoors rather than a day of screens.

If your family values nature, outdoor activities, and the kind of holiday where children get dirty and happy, Bohinj is excellent. If you need constant structured entertainment and beach resorts, this is probably not the right place.

Best Activities for Families

Swimming at the Lake

Lake Bohinj is one of the cleanest and safest natural swimming spots in Slovenia. The western end near Ukanc has shallow, sandy-bottomed entry points — ideal for small children. The water warms to 22–24 °C in July and August, which is perfectly comfortable.

There’s no entry fee for the lake. Grassy areas along the western shore are perfect for laying out towels and having a picnic. Lifeguards are present at some spots during peak summer — check with the tourist office.

Tip: Bring water shoes. The lake bottom is rocky in places, and young feet appreciate the protection.

Mostnica Gorge

Children love this walk. The trail follows the Mostnica River through a dramatic gorge with emerald-green pools visible below wooden walkways. The highlight — the Devil’s Bridge (Hudičev most), a natural stone arch — captures every child’s imagination.

The walk is 2 km each way on a maintained path. Suitable for children aged 5+. Younger children should be carried in a backpack carrier, as some sections have steep drops. Sturdy footwear is essential. Small entrance fee.

Vogel Cable Car

The ride itself is the attraction. Children watch the lake shrink below them as the cabin climbs to 1,535 metres. At the top, easy walking paths offer views across the entire Julian Alps. There’s a small restaurant at the top station.

Cost: Adults around 25 €, children (6–14) half-price, under 6 free. Check the current schedule — reduced hours in spring and autumn.

Tip: Even in summer, the temperature at 1,535 m is noticeably cooler. Bring a light jacket for the kids.

Savica Waterfall

The 553 stone steps up to the waterfall viewing platform are a manageable adventure for children aged 6+. Younger children can be carried but it’s a workout. The waterfall — dropping 78 metres in two stages — is genuinely impressive and worth the climb.

Arrive early (before 10 AM) or late (after 4 PM) to avoid the midday queue. Small entrance fee.

Cycling Along the Lake

The flat path along the lake from Ribčev Laz toward Ukanc is perfect for family cycling. No significant hills, minimal traffic, and the lake alongside you the entire way. Bike rental including children’s bikes and child seats is available in Ribčev Laz.

Bohinj Water Park

For a change from the lake, the Bohinj Water Park (Vodni park Bohinj) in Bohinjska Bistrica offers indoor and outdoor pools, waterslides, and a wellness area. It’s a good rainy-day option and popular with families with younger children.

Pletna Boats to Bled Island (Day Trip)

Bled is 30 minutes by car from Bohinj. The traditional pletna boat ride to Bled Island is a highlight for children of all ages — they get to ring the wishing bell in the church. Combine it with the Bled cream cake for a perfect family day trip.

Evening Activities

After dinner, the lakeside at Ribčev Laz is a lovely place for an evening walk. Older children enjoy table tennis (available on the terrace at Resman, among other places), and the lawn areas around the lake are perfect for games.

Family-Friendly Restaurants Near the Lake

Gostilna Rupa

In Srednja Vas, about a 5-minute drive from the lake. Generous portions of traditional Slovenian food — the Bohinj trout and štruklji are excellent. Relaxed atmosphere, child-friendly.

Gostilna Kramar

In Stara Fužina, near the Mostnica Gorge trailhead. Home-style cooking with local ingredients. Garden seating in summer where children can play while you eat.

Pizzerija Center

In Ribčev Laz. When children have had enough of traditional cuisine and just want pizza, this is the reliable option. Walking distance from most accommodation in the village.

Picnics

Arguably the best family dining option. Buy supplies from the small shop in Ribčev Laz or the supermarket in Bohinjska Bistrica, and eat at one of the many lakeside spots. If your accommodation has kitchen access, you can prepare meals there and save significantly on restaurant costs.

Where to Stay with Kids

What Families Need

  1. Space — Children need room to move, especially on rainy days.
  2. Kitchen access — Being able to prepare snacks, heat baby food, or cook a quick pasta saves money and reduces restaurant stress.
  3. Parking — Loading and unloading a car with children’s gear requires proximity.
  4. Outdoor space — A garden, terrace, or lawn where children can play safely.
  5. Walking distance to the lake — Minimising car trips with children makes everyone happier.

Accommodation Options for Families

Apartments are often the best fit for families with young children — you get a full kitchen, a separate sleeping area, and more space. Stare Apartments and Apartments Kramar in Ribčev Laz are good options.

B&Bs with kitchen access work well for families who don’t need an apartment’s full living room but want the ability to self-cater. At Resman in Ribčev Laz, the shared kitchen is available for guests, and the enclosed terrace with a ping pong table, swing, and lawn area gives children space to play. The 500-metre walk to the lake is manageable even with small children.

Hotels like Hotel Jezero offer convenience but at higher prices and with less flexibility for self-catering.

Farm stays are a wonderful option if your children are interested in animals and you don’t mind being further from the lake.

Practical Tips for Families

Safety

Lake Bohinj has no formal lifeguard service across its entire length, though some beaches have seasonal supervision. The lake deepens quickly in some areas. Supervise children at all times near the water. Water shoes are recommended as the lake bottom is uneven.

Sun Protection

Altitude amplifies UV exposure. The Bohinj valley sits at 525 metres, and Vogel at 1,535 metres. Apply sunscreen generously, even on overcast days.

Medical Facilities

The nearest health centre is in Bohinjska Bistrica (6 km from the lake). For emergencies, call 112. The nearest pharmacy is also in Bohinjska Bistrica.

Strollers

A stroller works on the lakeside path and through Ribčev Laz village. It does not work on mountain trails, the Mostnica Gorge path, or the Savica steps. A baby carrier backpack is essential for hiking with young children.

Bohinj Guest Card

When you stay at registered accommodation in Bohinj, you receive the Bohinj Guest Card — it provides free bus rides in the area, free entry to the Bohinj Museum, and discounts on cable cars, water park entry, and various activities. Ask your host for the card at check-in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the lake safe for children to swim in?

Yes. The water quality is excellent and the western beaches have gentle entry points. There are rocky areas — water shoes are recommended. Always supervise children near water.

Can we manage without a car?

Possible but difficult with children. Buses connect Bled to Ribčev Laz, but with children’s gear, nappies, and the need for flexibility, a car makes a significant difference.

What if it rains for several days?

Bohinj Water Park, the Bohinj Museum in Stara Fužina, a day trip to Bled (castle, cream cake), the Pokljuka Gorge, and indoor activities at your accommodation (board games, cooking together). At Resman, children enjoy the ping pong table on the terrace.

Is Bohinj better than Bled for families?

Both work. Bled offers the pletna boat ride and more restaurants. Bohinj offers more nature, cleaner swimming, less crowding, and better value. For active, outdoor-loving families, Bohinj is usually the better choice. For a shorter, more structured visit, Bled may be easier.

How many days should we stay?

A minimum of 3 days to experience the lake, a hike, and a day trip. A week allows you to cover all the major activities at a relaxed family pace. Children especially benefit from having unstructured time — not every day needs a plan.
